no title : Ariel Cotton
drawing & comics

In the last half year, I have experienced two life changing events: my boyfriend, who was also my first love, broke up with me after five years, and I moved to Berlin, after living in New York City all my life. Both of those events opened up the world to me. After the breakup, every song, book, film and work of art about heartbreak made much more sense to me. I was able to empathize with all my friends who had experienced it more deeply than I previously could. It was as though I had been living in a safe, womb-like chamber for half a decade, and then I was expelled out into the world. Likewise, coming to Europe after spending my entire life in the same place also made me look at the world differently. Leaving New York behind unveiled a world of cultures and people who live by an entirely different truth from what I’ve always known.

Having the world unfold around me has instilled in me a curiosity to learn more about it. I’m dedicating this year to having as many new experiences and learning as many different perspectives as I possibly can. There is a lot about both of those occurrences that I am still processing and trying to understand. These drawings are my reaction to those events. They will eventually be scanned into the computer and turned into comics. They are not finished pieces; they are part of a larger project still in progress. Over the course of this year I want to produce a body of comics dealing with topics of change, different perspectives, and the absurdity of life, both in a personal and in a universal way.
