MEMORY : Elien Roonse
drawing, photography

I collect and document my environment by photographing and taking notes about it. I make pictures from rooms where we are living and where you find a lot of objects and architectural forms. These places are not spectacular, they are rather boring. For example beds, floors, heating… I’m surrounded by these objects everywhere; this is why I’m interested in them. I document these spaces because I don’t want to forget them. I see the same patterns in different places, they remind me off each other, and they evoke memories. Recognition plays an important role. Making pictures is my way to get grip on my environment, where objects, utensils and architectural forms overgrow me.

I’m using this pictures and notes to make paintings, drawings and installations. You’ll find a lot of lines, repetition and patterns in my paintings. Sometimes you can recognize the space or objects, sometimes they become completely abstract. By applying abstraction I reflect on the subjects of archive and memory. Most of the time it’s an anonymous image from things that are surrounding everybody in life. The results are deconstructed to the extent that possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. In paintings I play with thick and thin layers, with transparency, shiny and matte colours.

In this residency in Lendava I’m focussing on drawing and painting on paper. I’m experimenting with the few materials I have here, such as drawing pencils, tape, cutter, pens, paper, video camera.

In Lendava (and other parts of Slovenia) I’m making pictures of places and houses that i vsit; I’m also making notes from little aspects in rooms that interest me. I’m searching for architectural forms, patterns and objects that I recognise from other places. I want to compare these constantly recurring forms and patterns. This creates a sese if connection in my world, because everywhere I go I find the same recognizable things that can make me feel at home. I’m making couples of old and new pictures. I’m (re-)using them to make drawings and a ‘Memory-game’. By this I’m repeating the forms endlessly, just as the objects and forms do in real life. One of the couples is, for example, a painting I made in November 2013 from the floor where I was working and a picture from the same floor I saw during my trip to Lendava at a metro station Klinikàk in Budapest. These little coincidences all over the world amaze me and make the world into a big playground for me.
