A DATE WITH HIM : En-En See
sculpture & painting

My residency work at D’CLINIC is an experiment with the space between studio and land; between inner and outer. On stripping away the excesses of modern life, I use common materials such as sugar dust to trace the interaction of patterns from lace. The resurfacing of lace patterns on concrete ground at D’CLINIC was inspired by the language of lace in Hungary and specifically sourced from a collection at the Göcseji Museum.

In the initial phase of an archaeological excavation beside the museum, archaeologists unearthed walls from the Castle of Zalaegerszeg. Reflecting the underlying history, the unspoken and the everyday I was inspired to paint two bricks of the castle dated from the 18th century. These found objects were arranged with 21st century objects – a torn poster, i-phone and plastic umbrellas. The castle was situated at the border of Hungary and Turkey.

The space in-between focuses on double consciousness, mutual relations, on exchange and reciprocity, giving and taking, giving and receiving. The nearby forests and lakes is an inspirational site for an experiment in form, texture and gesture. In the form of visual poetry I expanded on my series, ‘Conversation with air and water’ by floating text on the surface of the lake and using water from a medicinal lake area to create a series of paintings around the lake. The healing waters in this region and heritage forests was an inspiration for foraging discarded umbrellas and translating it into a new form. This blanket was constructed from discarded umbrellas on a windy weekend. The blanket is a symbol of protection and safety. It was hung on a tree as a conversation piece with air. For the residency exhibition a large ephemeral work will be realised on the concrete ground with hope that the audience will walk into the shared space, leaving gestural marks as an unintentional performance.
