Travel reawakens my sense of wonder, keeping me humble and giving me fresh perspective and creative inspiration. Compulsive curiosity leads me to explore new locations and experiences. My courage and understanding grow as I immerse myself in unfamiliar situations. Surrounded by foreign language and culture, I discover connections and similarities that communicate without requiring words.

The language of textiles is universal. Stories are recorded and shared using thread, cloth, colour and pattern. Time and labour are invested in each project, giving them value and creating heirlooms to be treasured for generations. Inspired by the colours, techniques, and materials of traditional hetési textiles, I document my own journey, enabled by the legacy of those who have gone before me, leaving a record for those who follow.

Heidi Friesen is a fibre artist currently studying at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Canada. She has experimented with a wide range of visual and performance art forms, working professionally as a photographer and graphic designer before finding her niche with textiles. She enjoys merging various forms of art, craft, and design in a manner that is both pragmatic and ornamental with a strong conceptual foundation.
