SUSPENDING AND OTHER TRICKS : Karen Bernard
performance

My work is often placed at the outer limits of the defining criteria for dance. This precarious edge is what interests me and is also, I believe, what has expanded the definition of what dance is and, more importantly, is capable of being. My practice often incorporates text, video and found objects.  Boundaries are shaken, blurred, and often erased in my work; my choreography eludes easy definition or quick categorization.  As an older dancer I defy stereotypes—and by embracing my limitations, ideally, I will make it possible for me to perform my work till the end of my life, and to enlarge the definition and scope of who is a dancer and what we can do and explore throughout our lives.

The project SUSPENDING AND OTHER TRICKS, is a solo dance using visuals and sound score about a personal history that is closer to the end than the beginning. I am just one week into my residency and already I have had two happy accidents. My workspace in the front gallery opens out to the street. Its huge windows invite a voyeuristic audience. I also discovered a pop song entitled “Stranger in Moscow” by Michael Jackson. Lendava is not Moscow, but the sentiments of the song have inspired a quirky association.
