painting & instalation

”It looks like a Disney castle,” I said when entering Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest. My words were absurd. Walt Disney appropriated and mixed whatever suited his vague but convincing aesthetic of ”Europeanness”. Folk stories were censored and morphed to appeal to the masses, and what had been oral tradition was adapted for the screen and the visual culture of the 20th century. The castle is itself built in an eclectic style, in a time when Europe was writing and revising her own history, striving to create an aura for every nation and a common past for every citizen to identify with. Eclectic architecture is meant to feel familiar, but point you towards something else. Heimlich and Unheimlich. The Disney castles look like the Vajdahunyad Castle. A copy of a copy of a copy…

I’m interested in the flux of visual impressions, how they submerge and cement in our subconscious, how they rise to the surface in dreams, in the patterns we create in order to try to make sense both of reality and the world we create inside of our heads when escaping THE REAL WORLD. During my residency here in Zalaegerszeg, I’ve come across things that I know somehow belong together. By painting and arranging them, I give them new characteristics and personalities. I’ve created a world of symbols, archetypes, and patterns, recycling phenomena in absurdum. I make a lot of rules for myself when playing this game of symbols, determining what is good and what is evil, what is true and what is permitted. I love to disobey my own rules – place something forbidden into the mise-en-scène just to fuck it up a little. Anything you place in the same room will inevitably communicate. It’s a rebus without an answer. (*photo credits also to Katarina H.)
