puppet show by Lauren Redpath and Carlos Parraga

Things are not always what they seem….but they usually are.

We are a pair who have set out to create a performance that incorporates our travelling lifestyle and uses this lifestyle as part of its creation process. This places restrictions on the format of the show
and the mode of creation but also gives us the opportunity to feed organically off our surroundings and the influences it provides us. This means our creation process is constantly changing and evolving and will continue to do so during the performance. We have chosen the outlet of a puppetry street performance to work with our travelling and to make sure that the performance environment will be everchanging, in turn influencing us as we gauge what is best for the audience at hand.

We are interested in the archetypes used in childrens stories and the adaption of these to the modern world. Childrens stories are not what they used to be, the blunt teaching and learning tool that provided life lessons has been glamourised. In the scenario’s we create, we endeavour to play with child like sterotypes and expectations and redine what they may mean, using the brutality of the lessons taught by these stereotype’s to make what is expected unexpected. Through the character of a Little Girl and a Monster we discover and play with one’s perceptions. Perhaps not all Monsters are as scary as first thought and all they eat are carrots. But then again, perhaps they are seen as horrible because it’s a personality they can’t shake loose.
