A CO-EFFICIENT OF WEIRDNESS : Allison Halter & Holly Streekstra
MiXER collaboration project : JULY 2012

ALLISON HALTER (USA) and HOLLY STREEKSTRA (USA) are united by their common interests in natural and practical magical, oblique strategies, and what might exist beyond the threshold of sensation. Together they have begun exploring these shared fascinations through video, photography, actions, performance, and installation. In their time at D’CLINIC studios in Lendava, Slovenia, they have accumulated an odd collection of artifacts, such as brooms, bells, vigil lights, “healing” waters, and moonbeams. No hierarchical distinctions are made between objects from the natural world, and those which have been manufactured. These items speak to a desire to affect and delight the world around us as a way of asserting control within our inexplicable existence.

A consideration of the idea and experience of weirdness – that being related to the uncanny – highlights the otherness that can be witnessed when something exists outside of its expected function.  The artists state: “When we approach this inquiry with boundless curiosity, instances reveal themselves to us constantly, as though we have become magnetic to these phenomena.”

Halter and Streekstra have created an artists’ book and exhibition that serve as a compendium of their time in Lendava. A CO-EFFICIENT OF WEIRDNESS is a series of investigations, in the form of charged actions and spaces, based in the belief that one can influence the extramundane.
